IS YOUR BODY YOUR FRIEND?
Even though I am in my 50s, I am enjoying living in this body of mine. In fact, I am surprised and delighted to feel healthier and stronger now than I did in my 30s.
You see, in my 30s I was working long hours for a big company. At that time, self-care to me meant rewarding myself for my hard work by buying take-away lunch every day.
But do you know what? I felt sluggish and I was frequently getting colds and flu. I was constantly stressing about work, tossing and turning at night and struggling to get up in the morning.
You see, we live in this world in which we are facing massive workloads, sitting all day, working on computers, eating junk food and sometimes we don’t even think about our bodies – how they are feeling or what they really need.
But you know that there is a cost. You can only disregard your body’s needs for so long before the cost starts to get too high.
Do you sometimes feel too tired to move?
Do you sit all day and then feel stiff and sore?
Do you reward yourself with junk food?
Do you grab chocolate or a coffee to boost your energy?
Do you ever wonder if this is the best your body will feel? Or whether there is anything you can do about it?
In my 30s I thought “I have a body” and my body often seemed like a burden I had to drag around with me. But I have found that the answer starts with realising that “I am embodied”. Whatever I do to my body, I am doing to myself.
But I never would have got there on my own. I started with getting regular massages, then Alexander lessons (for body awareness and posture), and then joined InterPlay – a playful way to get in touch with what you need – body, mind and soul.
I have learned to treat my body with respect and kindness. I have developed healthy habits which includes eating lots of vegetables and fruit, daily meditation, exercise and good sleep hygiene and making time to play with others (dance, swim, sing, and so much more).
Today I have more energy and better health than I had dreamed was possible. If you are interested in exploring how to develop a healthier, more balanced relationship with your body, fill in the Contact Me form below so we can have a chat.
